For its leading role in the arts and sciences, as well as its early and extensive system of street lighting, in the 19th century Paris became known as the City of Light. The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range entirely in Europe, stretching 1,200km across seven Alpine countries: France, Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia.
